Mike is the conductor of UpSwing, Dallas New Horizons and Frisco Jazz Band. Below are pictures of him and the Band of American's Few, a band of ex-marines.

Band of America's Few
The Quantico Marine Band had been a regular performing group for the Nova Scotia International Tattoo since the early 1980's. Literally hundreds of Marine Bandsmen performed in Halifax over the years and it became a coveted assignment to be stationed in Quantico and their experiences were never forgotten. During that period a special affection developed between the citizens of Halifax and the Band resulting in an official proclamation naming the QMB as honorary Nova Scotian's. Not only were they honorary Nova Scotians but they also made life longs friends with the organizers of the Tattoo and countless other people from around the world. Sadly, This relationship ended in 1996 as a result of new policy from the Office of the Secretary of Defense- Public affairs stating that the support of Tattoos were now prohibited. There have been numerous attempts over the years to change the policy from every level that you could imagine but no change was made. Despite the absence of the Marines, the long-standing friendship in Halifax continues to this day. There has been no real American presence in the largest indoor show in North America since.

This past summer in 2009, an opportunity presented itself through a dear friend of Marine Music, to establish and develop a Band of former/retired Marines. Our friend, Guthrie Woods had sponsored other Bands in years past in Halifax, but his expectations (being a professional) were never quite met resulting in the their disbandment. Last summer, I was invited to give some Conducting Master Class Sessions to the Band of the Ceremonial Guard in Ottawa, ON as a non-paid event. They are the band that plays at the Parliament, (their National Capital) on a daily basis during the summer months . While in Ottawa, a mutual friend and Assistant Director for the Nova Scotia Tattoo suggested they we have breakfast withmy old friend Guthrie. During breakfast, the subject of starting a new Band developed and became the genesis of the “Band of America’s Few”. Guthrie would fund the band and I would develop and Direct the Band as equal partners. Next, a mass e-mail from my Facebook friends list resulted in a flash flood of enthusiastic, motivated former Marines from across the United States. The overwhelming result was that this band was literally built over night. Now months later, there are over three hundred members in the group site and people lined up in case any of the 56 musicians this year can't make it. As a result of two dear friends with a unified vision with complimenting joint assets, the American Flag will fly again in the Metrocentre in Halifax as the "Band of America's Few"!

Band of America's Few Our mission this year is complete. Lightning does strike twice. When the last note faded, we all looked at each other knowing just what we accomplished. Our history making inaugural year was a complete success. We want to thank again all or fans for the support. We have already been invited back next year!
This was a fantastic experience on many fronts, being with Marines, returning with a band to the Tattoo, and reuniting with old friends (and making lots of new ones). It was the best of times. I'm honored to have been a part of the BAF's inaugural performances.

Happy 4th of July from Halifax. Today "Our Nation" will be honored with the playing of our National Anthem and I have been invited to Conduct it during the Finale of the Nova Scotia Tattoo. What an Honor! The crowds have been going crazy each night during our floor show! Thank you for you continued financial support! ... We are about to top 1800 fans! You guys are awesome!

Schwartz, William "Bill" William ("Bill") Schwartz, born on May 31, 1921 in Canton, MS, passed away Sunday, May 30th, 2010, surrounded by his family at his home in Dallas, Texas. Among his many interests and accomplishments, was a lifelong passion for music. Beginning with his high school traveling band, playing at the Cotton Bowl and at the Kentucky Derby, continuing on with the 106th Battalion Band of the Mississippi National Guard and since 2007 as a member of the "New Horizons" orchestra, reaching people of all ages his love for music. Bill was also and avid golfer. Rain or shine, Bill was always ready to play a round of golf. Bill Schwartz was a patriotic American and had a very strong love for his country. At the age of 22, Bill was among the youngest Captains in the United States Air Force, and was appointed to the Air Force Command and General Staff School at Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas. After his service for his country, Bill graduated with honors from Northwestern University in Chicago, Illinois. It was in Chicago that Bill met and married the love of his love, Hilde Schwartz in 1950. Bill had several business interests, one of which brought him and his bride to Dallas in 1951. In 1961 Bill joined Connecticut Mutual Life Insurance Co., which later became a part of Mass Mutual, devoting a 46-year career to the service of families and businesses as a Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU) and a lifetime membership in the Million Dollar Roundtable. While his young family and demanding career grew, Bill was a tireless volunteer in many organizations. Bill served as Temple Emanu-El Brotherhood President, and was on the leadership team developing Arts Festivals and other new fundraising events. Bill served The Jewish Federation of Dallas and was a devoted volunteer, fundraiser and Board Member of the Town North YMCA, working for decades to help build a stronger community. Most of all, Bill will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and a true gentleman. Bill led a life unselfishly devoted to others, and had great joy in serving his family, community, and country. Bill is survived by his wife Hilde, his son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Suzy Schwartz; son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Julie Schwartz; son Lawrence and fiancée Jackie Gilbert; and grandchildren, Allison, Matthew, Sam, Cole, Zack, Cameron Schwartz and Shelby Tucker; his niece, like a daughter, Judy Silverstein and her husband Dr. Russell Silverstein; brother Maurice Schwartz and his wife Cecelia; and sister Miriam Paletz. His gentle soul and sweet spirit will be missed by the many lives he touched. Funeral services will be held Tuesday June 1, 2010 at 12:30 p.m. Temple Emanu-El Lefkowitz Chapel. Burial services to immediately follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park. The family requests that memorial contributions be made to your favorite charity.

New Horizons Band Selects Mike Rossi as Conductor

DALLAS (March 22, 2010) – Mike Rossi has been named conductor of the New
Horizons Band of Dallas (NHBD), a group of approximately 60 adult volunteer
musicians who perform concerts across Greater Dallas. He will direct both the concert
band and its affiliated jazz orchestra, UpSwing.
Rossi is an adjunct professor of music at Texas A&M University in Commerce and a
trumpet professional who has performed with the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra and
also conducts the Frisco Jazz Band.
"Mike brings loads of talent and energy to the position," said Phil Cook, president of
NHBD. "We're excited to be working with him, and we look forward to sharing the
results with our audiences over the Dallas area."
Established in 1999, NHBD is unique among Dallas community bands due to its
minimum age of 50 for members and its jazz orchestra that performs separately from the
concert band. There are over 170 New Horizons Bands in the USA and Europe.
The New Horizons concert band covers a range of music from pop to Broadway and
Hollywood, touching on jazz and light classical, including marches and other traditional
wind band repertory. Special holiday concerts can often be created on request.
UpSwing specializes in dance music and the "big band" sound with standard
instrumentation and a featured vocalist.
New Horizons and UpSwing are available for concerts before a variety of audiences such
as professional and civic organizations; church groups; schools; retirement communities
and senior centers. As a nonprofit organization, both bands perform free of charge but
accept and encourage tax-deductible contributions from the community to help meet
expenses.

The Vernal Equinox falls on March 20 and marks the first day of Spring. The sun has reached the equator so the hours of day and night are equal
around the world-a perfect balance of dark and light. At this time, we celebrate life emerging once again from the earth and we move out of darkness
into the season of growing light. This festival is also known as Eostre, in honor of the Anglo-Saxon goddess of Spring. It is from her name that the
word "Easter" is derived. "East"-the direction of the first light and warmth of the dawning sun-is also derived from the name of the Goddess of
Spring. Eggs and hares, symbols of fertility, are also tied to the Vernal Equinox. March began the rutting time of hares-typically shy, the normally
quiet hare becomes quite fanatical and fervent. They run for miles and can even become aggressive and can appear quite mad, hence the English and
French expressions "as mad as a March Hare." The date for Easter, the resurrection of Christ, is also tied to the Vernal Equinox and guided by the
moon. Easter falls on the first Sunday after the full moon that occurs either on the equinox or any of the following 28 days.
